Wow! What a great day to mark our 100th day in Kindergarten! I have enjoyed listening to the students count to one hundred. We have filled our day with exciting hands-on learning activities to celebrate our 100th day.

Math Focus:

• Made 100 tally marks to count to one hundred
• Made 100 day hats with ten dimes to count by tens
• Fair trade with money for different ways to make 100
• Place value: hundreds, tens, & ones
• Sorting objects to equal 100
• Special 100 day snack to form the number 100 with pretzels and doughnuts


Language Arts Focus:

• Sang the 100 days of school song
• 100 day writing "If I had 100 dollars..."
• 10X10 chart including sight words, blends, letters, etc.
• 100th day of school book
• Read and recognize 100 sight words

 

 Thank you so much for all of your help reaching 100 cans for our Rachel's Challenge SAVE IT FORWARD canned food drive. We were so excited to work as a class to collect 100 can's Thank you for your donations! GO TEAM VAUGHN!!

 

 We will exchange Valentine's Day Cards on Tuesday, February 14th (We have 19 students). Be on the lookout for more information regarding this.

 We are so glad to have Ms. Lindsey Lewis in our classroom. She is planning wonderful lessons to help make learning come alive! She is a great addition to our team! Please feel free to stop by and say "hello."

WELCOME BACK!

 I hope everyone had a wonderful winter break.  We have started the year off with a bang!  I hope everyone had a restful break!  I am so excited to get back to learning!  Hope the kids are too! 

Writing:  We will continue working on writing skills, with a focus on writing complete sentences using punctuation correctly.  Students will be encouraged to use sight words, descriptive words, phonetic spelling, and spacing.  The students will begin using graphic organizers with their writing.

Language Arts: we will focus on syllables, blends, digraphs, nouns, word families, spelling patterns, compound words, sight words (goal: 30 or more words), main idea, details from text, beginning, ending sounds, rhyming words, vowels, and reading.

Math: correct numeral formation of numbers to 20, making fair trades using pennies, nickels, and dimes, quarters.  Combination of fair trades using pennies and nickels, ordinal numbers, place value, missing numbers on a number line,  Read it, Draw it, Solve it math journals.

Science/Social Studies:  Dr. Martin Luther KIng Jr.,  Where we live (continent, country, state, county, city, address),  sort objects by their composition (wood, plastic, glass, cloth, etc.) or a given characteristic (sink/float, shapes, color, size, etc.) and characteristics of the winter season.

Big Book:  The Snow, The Jacket I wear in the Snow -  Understanding elements of a story, making text to text connections with stories, locating a letter, word, & sentence, retelling a story in sequence, and fiction vs nonfiction stories.

And a Happy New Year!

Last year, we adopted Lt. Cameron West's platoon and began to send care packages to his platoon in Afghanistan.  Shortly after, Lt. Cameron West was wounded and had to come home; however, Frey continued to send care packages to his platoon in Afghanistan until the end of the school year. 

 

On Friday, 12/16/11 Lt. Cameron West will be visiting our school to thank all of the students.  We are holding a "Coins for Cameron" drive on this Tuesday and Wednesday. 
We are planning to present Lt. Cameron West with a check for the Wounded War Foundation on Friday, 12/16th.  At 10:00 AM, our students will line the hallways for our "Hero's Welcome Walk of Honor".  The students will stand in the hallways, holding the American Flag, as Lt. Cameron takes the "Walk of Honor" at Frey.  He will walk down each hallway so that each student will be able to see him and thank him for his service to our Country. 

 

Our staff and students are asked to wear their Lt. Cameron shirt from last year, the Patriotic Frey Shirt, or red, white, and blue on this day. The presentation of the check will be broadcasted from the Media Center to the classrooms and Lt. Cameron will take a moment to speak to the students from this broadcast.

 

This won't be the first time Lt. Cameron West has walked the halls of Frey.  He took his first "Walk of Honor" as a 5th grader in May of 1997, when he graduated from Frey Elementary School.  Lt. Cameron West is very special to us because he was a former Frey student.  It is an honor to have him come and visit us and we are so proud of this Marine.

 

In addition, each student that sends in a donation on this Tuesday and Wednesday will receive a link to add to our Rachel's Challenge Chain of Kindness.

Dear Parents,
When devising our school supply list for the current year, we tried to be very cautious in asking for supplies.   Each school year all grade levels combine a few supplies to one central storage area.  With the rapid change in weather, we are finding ourselves in need of a few community school supplies.  It would be greatly appreciated if each family could send in some Kleenex, Clorox Wipes, Ziploc Sandwich and Snack size bags.

Language Arts:

Reading - Understanding story elements (characters, setting, problem/resolution),making text to text connections with stories, locating a letter, word, & sentence, retelling a story in sequence, and fiction vs nonfiction stories.

Big Books:  Corduroy, Birthdays, Shopping, Addition Math Stories, Gingerbread Man story comparisons, Gravity, Push and Pull, Sink and Float

Phonics - Blending CVC words,  rhyming words, Word Syllable Practice, Short vowel word families, blends (ch, th, sh, wh)

Writing - Using a graphic organizer to assist with writing.  Focus on characters, setting, actions, details.  Beginning each sentence with a capital letter, ending with punctuation, and "stretching out" the sentence for added details.   Students are using "Mr. Spaceman"  to help with the neatness of their writing!

Math

•  Working with a Number Line (counting on from a given number, not always starting with 1)
• 2D and 3D shapes - new vocabulary (vertices, plane, solid)
• Combining and Separating Sets (Addition and Subtraction)
• Counting to 100
• Money Review:  Coins and their values
• Math Journals - higher order problem solving
• Ordinal numbers review
• Extending a pattern and finding the missing shape in a pattern

 

Keep practicing those sight words at home - we will begin assessing this week!

The holiday book for the students was sent home to complete about your special traditions.  Please help your child complete these books and send them back in before December 19th with illustrations and the sentences completed.  Please do your personal best work! We look forward to reading and sharing each book with the class! Do your best!

What are we learning?

 Language Arts:

Big Books:  Quiet in the Library, Addition Story Problems,  Mrs. Wishy Washy,  Sheep in a Shop: We are understanding story elements (characters, setting, problem/resolution), locating a letter, word, & sentence, retelling a story in sequence, and fiction vs nonfiction stories and making text to text connections with stories.   The students just love to read during shared reading time!   Keep up the great reading skills.

We are using those reading skills to assist us with writing as well.  The students are beginning to write a complete sentence with capitalization at the beginning and punctuation at the end of the sentence.  Writing will be modeled to show the kids the idea of "stretching out" a sentence.  This means adding details and to stay on topic.  We are going tomake our stories come alive!

Sight Words for practice: am, brown, do, she, he, play, penny, nickel, dime, five, six, yes, away, little, on, by   

We have introduced blends:  "Sh", "ch", "th", and "wh" blending sounds - we are singing songs and chants to introduce and review these sounds.   We are creating a graphic organizer to organizing our sounds.

Math:
2D and 3D shapes - we are making comparisons and identifying sides and corners.  We are also using these shapes to make and complete patterns.   We will continue to discuss ordinal numbers 1st - 10th.  We will practice writingour numbers to 20.   (no reversals)  Read It, Draw It, and Solve It/Problem Solving for additon word problems.  Keep up the great thinking. 

Social Studies:

American Symbols -  Statue of Liberty, Bald Eagle, US Flag, Georgia Flag, and Pledge of Allegiance

Holidays:  Veterans Day and Thanksgiving

Science:

What is Motion?  What are the actions of push and pull?   Seasonal Changes, Night and day, and gravity

Rachel's Challenge

Help start a Chain Reaction:
 
Rachel's Challenge has kicked off to a great start!  Frey is now starting our "Chain of Kindness".  We are asking students, teachers/staff, parents, and visitors to participate by writing on a strip of paper an act of kindness you personally experience while on campus. We will add this link to our "Chain of Kindness".  Please just ask the front office or your teacher for a strip of paper anytime.

Fire Lane at Frey

The Cobb County Fire Marshalls have begun writing Fire Lane Parking violations in school parking lots this week.  A number of people have already received citations.  They were at Frey this week and will be back to continue checking the fire lane as well as the Handicapped parking spots.  The Fire Marshall will continue writing these citations throughout the county this school year.  Please remember that if you park in the fire lane (the curb that is painted red), you risk being ticketed.
