Try these fun Science Olympiad events to test your skills! Every few weeks we will add a few more for you to try at home!
1. Barge BuildingMaterials: Bowl of Water, 15 x 15 cm piece of aluminum foil.
Object: Construct a barge out of the aluminum foil that can hold the maximum number of items.
Items to load in the barge: You can try pennies, legos, nuts, bolts, etc. Keep track of how many you can load in before the barge starts taking on water.
Once you start taking on water, the counting must stop. Try different designs to see which one is most effective.
2. AerodynamicsMaterials: Sheets of plain white paper, 5 cm of masking tape, a pair of scissors.
Object: Create a paper airplane that can hit a target on the floor no more than 12 meters away.
3. Bridge Building (This one is best to try with a friend)
Materials: 50 straws (no bend), 20 straight pins.
Object: Create a suspension bridge that spans the greatest possible distance and can support at least one chalkboard eraser in the center for 10 seconds.
Straws may be crimped and slipped together. No pins or straws may touch the floor. The bridge will suspend between two similar supporting structures - two chairs, two tables, etc.
