We have a new student.  We would like to welcome Csaba Wagner to our First Grade class!

3rd Quarter Curriculum:

Listed below are just some of the academic areas that your child will be working on over the next 9 weeks:

Reading:

Phonics: Long and short vowels, blends (fr, gr, gl, tr, cr, etc.), digraphs (th, ch, sh, wh), r- controlled vowels, and compound words

Sight Words: Recognizing 150 or more sight words (sight words are listed on the blog)

Reading a text (Level G or higher) independently with expression, comprehension at 95% accuracy

Retelling a story from beginning, middle, and end with details

Identifying the main idea of informational and fictional stories

Writing:

Writing a story independently by:

Generating ideas, developing a rough draft, using books to gather information, editing and revising

Maintaining a focus with supporting details and correct sequencing

Correct punctuation

Neat and legible handwriting

Math:

Place value up to 99 (tens and ones)

Addition and subtraction facts to 18 with accuracy and fluency

Fair trade with different coin combinations up to $1.00 and combinations of bills up to $20.00

Time - hour and half hour

Fractions - halves and fourths

Science:

Plants – identifying different parts of plants and their basic needs of plants and animals

Social Studies:

Contributions and character traits of historical figures – Harriet Tubman, Theodore Roosevelt, and George Washington Carver

Identifying and locating all continents and oceans

Parent Surveys came home with report cards, please read the directions below from administration:

• Parents please complete the survey using a number 2 pencil only.  NO PENS!
• Parents should NOT write names on the survey or the envelope.
• Parents should return the survey in the unsealed envelope provided by February 10^th.
• Parents should NOT seal the envelope and return to the teacher or the front office.

Lt Cameron West

Last year, we adopted Lt. Cameron West's platoon and
began to send care packages to his platoon in Afghanistan. Shortly after, Lt.
Cameron West was wounded and had to come home; however, Frey continued to send care packages to his platoon in Afghanistan until the end of the school year. On Friday, 12/16/11 Lt. Cameron West will be visiting our school to thank all of
the students. We are holding a "Coins for Cameron" drive on this Tuesday and
Wednesday. We are planning to present Lt. Cameron West with a check for
the Wounded War Foundation on Friday, 12/16th. At 10:00 AM, our students
will line the hallways for our "Hero's Welcome Walk of Honor". The students
will stand in the hallways, holding the American Flag, as Lt. Cameron takes the
"Walk of Honor" at Frey. He will walk down each hallway so that each student
will be able to see him and thank him for his service to our Country. Our staff
and students are asked to wear their Lt. Cameron shirt from last year, the
Patriotic Frey Shirt, or red, white, and blue on this day. The presentation of
the check will be broadcasted from the Media Center to the classrooms and Lt.
Cameron will take a moment to speak to the students from this
broadcast.

 

This won't be the first time Lt. Cameron West has
walked the halls of Frey. He took his first "Walk of Honor" as a 5th grader in
May of 1997, when he graduated from Frey Elementary School. Lt. Cameron West is very special to us because he was a former Frey student. It is an honor to have
him come and visit us and we are so proud of this Marine.

In addition, each student that sends in a donation
on this Tuesday and Wednesday will receive a link to add to our Rachel's
Challenge Chain of Kindness.

All parents are invited to our Holly Jolly breakfast on Wednesday, December 21st at 8:15.  We will have breakfast type food to munch on and then do a small, festive craft together. 

Here are some ideas for foods to bring:

• Breakfast casserole

• Biscuits and Jelly
• Juice
• Hot chocolate
• any type of specialty dish you would like to share with the class

Rachel’s Challenge/Save It Forward Food Drive

 So far we have had a wonderful response to our food collection for needy families here in Cobb County. We will continue to collect boxed and canned food until the 100^th day of school (Jan. 27^th), so please keep those donations coming! For each donation a student brings in, they receive a link to add to our Rachel’s Challenge Chain for their act of kindness. Our class has collected 74 cans thus far!!!!!  Thank you for your generosity!

Assessments:

Over the next few weeks I will begin assessing your child for the next report card.  Below are the subject areas and standards in which your child will be assessed.

Reading:

From Administration

Dear Parents,

When devising our school supply list for the current year, we tried to be very cautious in asking for supplies. Each school year all grade levels combine a few supplies to one central storage area. With the rapid change in weather, we are finding ourselves in need of a few community school supplies. It would be greatly appreciated if each family could send in some Kleenex, Clorox Wipes, Ziploc Sandwich and Snack size bags.

 

Rachel's Challenge: Tomorrow, a select few students from Frey will head to the Georgia Dome to meet with other Atlanta area schools and 11 Alive.  The children will join our "Chain of Kindness."  Today, the office staff measured our Frey chain links to be more than 505 feet long!!!!  We will continue to recognize the children and their "random acts of kindness."

Thank you for all of the food donations.  As of today, our class has collected 34 cans/boxes of food.  What a difference we will make.  Please do not forget to continue to send in 1 can or box of food each week from now until the 100th day of school. 

Math:  Our class has begun our money unit, focusing on coin values up to 50 cents.  This is a very difficult concept for most children to grasp and any additional help/work at home will be beneficial for your child.

Original Art Works magnets are due. If you are not going to purchase any items, please return the magnet to school in your child's folder as soon as possible.  Thank you for your assistance.

Donations: The first grade team is collecting liquid hand soap for our school supplies. If you can please pick up some while you are shopping, it would be greatly appreciated.

 

  

FYI: Our school is being patrolled by police to look for people parking in the fire lane.  We've had a few parents receive tickets recently. Make sure you do not park in the fire lane or you will most likely receive a ticket.

Parents, don't miss out on the Rachel's Challenge Meeting this Thursday at 6:00. This meeting will inform you about the Rachel's Challenge initiative that Frey is going to be implementing and the reason behind it. This meeting is for PARENTS ONLY due to the content shown and discussed. If you need to bring your children, we will have a movie room for them to go to. The students will have their Assembly for Rachel's Challenge during the day on Thursday that is age appropriate.

We promise you'll walk away with a new perspective on kindness and in helping us START A CHAIN REACTION!!!!

Help us highlight the importance of being healthy and saying no to drugs by having your child wear …

Monday - I am a Jean'ius because I am drug free (wear jeans)

Tuesday - Be all you can be, stay drug free (wear army attire/camouflage clothes)

Wednesday -Sock it to drugs - (wear mismatched socks)

Thursday - Put a cap on drugs (wear a cap/hat to school)

Friday - Stay in the game, be drug free (wear a team jersey)

 

Just a reminder that next week is conference week and school will dismissed two hours early. Our lunch time will 10:46-11:16. I am looking forward to meeting with everyone next week.

 

We have a big week ahead of us.  Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday will be CoGAT testing.  Please make sure to have your child eat a substantial and healthy breakfast.  Testing will begin at 8:00 AM each morning, so please make sure your child is on time. 

Friday we can all celebrate with the Annual Frey Fall Festival on Friday, October 7th! It is from 5:30 to 8:30. I can't wait to see you all there.

Snacks  Please remember to send in a snack for your child.  Some students are forgetting their snacks on a daily basis.  It might be helpful to keep an extra snack in their backpacks in case they forget to bring a snack to school.  Thank you!

Conference Week:  October 24th-28th

Curriculum

Math: Addition and Subtraction:  Single digit addition and subtraction facts up to 10. The class is also working on word problems up to 10.  Some terminology that we are working on to identify how to solve the problems are: combining sets, greater than, less than, more, less, least, sum, altogether, and how many are left.

The class will begin to take timed addition tests.   These tests are not given for a grade, but only to help your child gain confidence taking timed tests, using test taking strategies, and to help with fluency and accuracy.

Language Arts  Comprehension:  When reading or listening to a story, students should be able to retell the story in sequence.  They should also be able to identify the characters, setting, and important events in a story.

Handwriting:  Students are working on printing legibly with correct spacing between words and forming letters correctly.  This can be a very difficult task for many students.  Please have your child practice writing at home their name, family member’s names, address, and spelling words.  The more they practice the better they will become. 

Science:  We will continue to use weather vocabulary and knowledge to springboard into a water cycle unit.  Students will be expected to know science vocabulary like evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and accumulation.

Social Studies:  Children should be finishing up their Benjamin Franklin projects at home.  Please have your child practice delivering his/her information to alleviate any stress or anxiety about sharing in front of the class. 

We are off to a wonderful start to the school year.  The children have been working diligently to learn classroom expectations, routines, and rules.  Below are some topics we will be studying over the next few weeks:

Math: number sense and place value

Language Arts:  writing: complete sentences, capitalization, punctuation

Reading: predicting, characters, setting, main idea

Science:  weather, weather instruments

Homework:  Homework will begin on Monday, September 12th.  A cover letter explaining the homework process will be included.  In addition, please continue to read each night.  Just how important is reading every night.....

LET'S FIGURE IT OUT --- MATHEMATICALLY!

Student A reads 20 minutes five nights of every week;
Student B reads only 4 minutes a night...or not at all!

Step 1: Multiply minutes a night x 5 times each week.
Student A reads 20 min. x 5 times a week = 100 mins./week
Student B reads 4 minutes x 5 times a week = 20 minutes

Step 2: Multiply minutes a week x 4 weeks each month.
Student A reads 400 minutes a month.
Student B reads 80 minutes a month.

Step 3: Multiply minutes a month x 9 months/school year
Student A reads 3600 min. in a school year.
Student B reads 720 min. in a school year.

 

Scholastic Book Order:  Books order are due this Friday, September 9th.  Thank you to the families that have already placed an order!  Please remember that we earn free books for the classroom every time a parent places an order. 

Frey T-Shirts:  T-Shirts will go home tomorrow for those of you that have placed orders.  Please have your child wear his or her t-shirt on Friday, September 9th in remembrance of the 10 year anniversary of September 11th.

Frey T-Shirt

Dear Parents,

 

Please look for the pink order form that is coming home with your child today, August 29th.  These shirts are to be worn on 9/9 as we remember the 10th anniversary of 9/11.  We will also wear these shirts when Lt. Cameron West comes to visit our school.  Last year, our school rallied together to send items to Lt. Cameron West and his Marine Platoon in Afghanistan.  He will be coming to thank our parents, students, and staff this fall for our support.  We will inform you of the date he will be coming.  The shirt forms and payment have to be returned by THIS Thursday, September 1.  There won't be another opportunity to get these shirts.  Please, make your order today and return to your teacher before Thursday, September 1.  Thank you Frey parents and we hope you have a wonderful day.

What a terrific first week of First Grade!

Thank you for helping make our first week so terrific. The children are adjusting well to First Grade.  I enjoyed seeing so many of you at our Open House.  Thank you for taking time to peek into our year in First Grade.  If you have any questions for concerns, please feel free to contact me at jennifer.perkins@cobbk12.org or place a note in your child's daily folder.  If you were unable to make it to Open House and would like to view the Powerpoint presentation, please let me know and I will be more than happy to send you an email with the attachment.

Per the front office: Please drop your children off in the car line each morning.  For the safety of the children, children may not be dropped off in the parking lot.  You are more than welcome to park and walk your child to the door.  Please remember that all parents must sign in and receive a badge to wear on our school grounds.  Thank you for your assistance with this matter.

The Boy Scout Flyer that went home contained incorrect information and should be thrown away.  We have no further information at this time.

Last minute reminders!!

 

I cannot believe how quickly summer break is approaching us.  As we prepare for the last day, I wanted to send some reminders and new information to you.

 Monday, May 23rd:  Sports Day:  your child can wear a uniform or favorite sports teams’ uniform.

 Tuesday, May 24th:  Beach Day:  wear shorts, t-shirts, flip-flops, sunglasses, and bring a towel.  (Please, no bathing suits and you can pack tennis shoes for recess and P.E.)

 Wednesday:  Popcorn and Movie Day:  Last day of school.  Please remember to NOT send in backpacks, lunchboxes, and/or non-disposable water bottles on this day.  If your child would like to bring his or her lunch, please pack the lunch in a disposable bag.

 Reminder:  Tuesday and Wednesday, your child will be released at 1:30.  Lunch will be from 11:20-11:50 both days.
