Welcome Back!!!

 
Welcome back to the 2011-2012 school year!  I hope you had a wonderful summer.  For the 2011 - 2012 school year I am  going to work with students in grades K, 2, 4 and 5.  As a professional school counselor one of my job responsibilities is classroom guidance.  Classroom guidance takes place in  your child's classroom for thirty minutes every other week. Some of the topics we are going to focus on this year are career awareness, setting goals, conflict resolution and many more.

Happy New Year!  I hope everyone had a wonderful break!

Time has really flown by.  We are almost at the 100th day of school.  This year Frey is participating in the 100th day of  school canned food drive in conjunction with Rachel's Challenge.  Every class is trying to collect 100 cans of food by the 100th day of school  If you have not brought in your canned goods, it is not too late.   Need more information? Tips for Handling Holiday Stress

1. Set reasonable expectations early. For example, if you expect your  children to be home for family dinner instead of with friends, let them know.   2. Set a gift budget and stick to it. 3. Remember routines. Follow your normal routine as closely as possible to help reduce chaos and anxiety in yourself and your children. 4. Avoid explosive family topics. Redirect if they come up. 5. Simplify, Simplify, Simplify. More events equals more chaos.   6. Enjoy the time you spend with your family and friends. The season is not about the presents, but your presence with them. 7. Exercise and relax! Dance to holiday music. Get some fresh air by taking a walk around your neighborhood. Take a nap. 8. Just do your best. Don't expect everything to go as planned (or hoped).  Mishaps can be the best source of fond family memories.

Rachel’s Challenge/Save It Forward Food Drive

 So far we have had a wonderful response to our food collection for needy families here in Cobb County. We will continue to collect boxed and canned food until the 100^th day of school (Jan. 27^th), so please keep those donations coming! For each donation a student brings in, they receive a link to add to our Rachel’s Challenge Chain for their act of kindness. Thank you for your generosity!

Classroom guidance for the month of December will focus on:

K - Peer Pressure

2nd- Conflict Resolution

3rd - Gossip and Rumors

5th - Being Trustworthy

Save it Forward

Please join Frey as we SAVE IT FORWARD.  Our goal is to collect 100 cans of food by the 100th day of school. Jan.27, 2012.

All the food collected will go towards feeding families in our Cobb County community.

Fire Lane-  

The Cobb County Fire Marshalls have begun writing Fire Lane Parking violations in school parking lots this week.  A number of people have already received citations.  They were at Frey this week and will be back to continue checking the fire lane as well as the Handicapped parking spots.  The Fire Marshall will continue writing these citations throughout the county this school year.  Please remember that if you park in the fire lane (the curb that is painted red), you risk being ticketed.

Rachels Challange-

Help start a Chain Reaction:
 
Rachel's Challenge has kicked off to a great start!  Frey is now starting our "Chain of Kindness".  We are asking students, teachers/staff, parents, and visitors to participate by writing on a strip of paper an act of kindness you personally experience while on campus. We will add this link to our "Chain of Kindness".  Please just ask the front office or your teacher for a strip of paper anytime.

Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon week is the last week in October.  During this week we will focus on saying no to drugs and alcohol.  We will have dress up days this week to spotlight our commitment to saying no to drugs.

Rachel's Challenge

Frey Elementary is accepting Rachel's Challenge.  What is Rachel's Challenge you might ask?  Rachel's Challenge is a challenge to all of us to spread kindness throughout our school and to those we come in contact with. 

On October 20th we will host two school assemblies during the day.  At 6:00 p.m. on October 20th there will be an evening assembly for parents and community members.  I hope that you will accept the challange and come to our evening assembly to see how you can get involved in spreading kindness.

The school day is over, what do we do now?

At home strategies that can lead to Success in School

 
Ticket Please -Try limiting your child's TV and video game time.You can try this idea.  Every week give your child seven slips of paper.  Each slip is good for an hour of television and/or video games.,  Remind your child to plan ahead.  For example if your child wants to watch a two hour movie on Saturday, then  an extra ticket will need to be saved during the week.

Mix it up-If your child reviews information several ways, then they will be more likely to remember the information.  Fox example try passing a ball back and forth between you and your child while spelling your child's spelling words.  Not only will your child learn information in a new way, you can get a little exercise as well.

After School Chats "What's in your backpack"  Greet your child with this question, and you'll discover  a lot about what he/she does in class.

• Set aside time each day to go through your child's papers.
• Look over your child's work together.  Make specific comments that will make your child feel proud. This will encourage your child to do their best in school.
• Have your child talk through math problems or science experiments to show what they have learned. This is a great way to have your child review the information taught that day.
