Wow! What a great week we are having. Students are finishing up Maniac Magee and the students will be tested on Friday. This book has really gave us conversation starters that correlate to some of the issues in the Civil War. Mrs. Driver just read Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt. Now, the class is making their own Freedom Quilt. A great dinner question is, "Who were some of the leading abolitionists and how did they try to abolish slavery"?
In Language Arts we are focused on the elements of a good story. We are catching on! You should see some of the great stories that we are working on. The plots are amazing. We watched a short clip from an award winning film and decided that we could make a great film. So be on the lookout for upcoming videos.
In Math, we are learning place value of decimals. At this point, your student should be able to identify what value each digit has, write them in standard, expanded, and word form, and be able to compare and order decimal numbers.
After grading the beginning of the year multiplication and division tests, we realized that students are a little rusty with their facts. In class we are doing Mastering Math and First in Math to sharpen those skills. However, at home practice makes perfect. Our goal is for students to answer 100 multiplication and division problems in 5 minutes. This skill is crucial to the success of your child in the 5th grade Math curriculum.
