Reading and Writing Lessons:
Reading Assessments: Reading Fluency and Reading Comprehension (Further information will be sent home the end of this month regarding your child’s individual reading level, along with strategies for improvement.)
Big Book Lessons: Understanding story elements (characters, setting, problem/resolution), making text to text connections with stories, retelling a story in sequence with details, and fiction vs nonfiction stories
Whole Group Literacy: Winter Describing Words, Rhyming Word Families, Winter Story Writing, Long Vowel Practice (“Two Vowels Together” Rule and “Quiet Magic E” Rule.), Double “oo” rule, Syllables with Winter Words, Spell Page Fun
Handwriting Practice: Zanner Bloser Upper Case and Lower Case will be introduced this week. This will be practiced weekly. The focus of this writing activity is top-down directionality along with awareness of the writing lines.
Modeled writing lesson: Creating a simple story using a title, sight words, descriptive words, phonetic spelling, spacing, punctuation and an ending. (5 sentences). We will continue to write on your child’s paper, observations and comments regarding your child’s writing progress to provide you feedback.
Digraphs and Endings: -sh, -ch, -th, -wh -ing,
“Aa” Controlled Vowels: ar, er, ir, or and ur
Reading Groups: Our reading groups use level readers to teach decoding strategies and comprehension understanding. Our focus now is also on retelling events in order and using descriptive language.

First Grade Words: they, then, when, with, was, went
Math Centers:
Combining and Separating Sets (Addition and Subtraction)

Characteristics of the Winter Season
This year in conjunction with Rachel’s Challenge, Frey Elementary will be partnering with Alive Ministries, Inc. to help meet the needs of students & their families right here in Cobb County. Alive Ministries establishes food pantries within Title 1 schools around the county that have a large density of children living in poverty. We hope that you will join us in our first school wide act of kindness as we challenge each homeroom to collect 100 cans or boxes of food by the 100th day of school.
January 27th is the 100th day of school and our class is gaining towards those 100 items!!! Thank you for your generosity!!!
