What We are Learning:

Math -  We will  review the concept that when decimal fractions are added or subtracted the same rules of computation apply as for whole numbers.  We will continue exploring fractions, reading/writing/equivalent fractions and comparing and ordering fractions.

English - We will begin working with adverbs.

Spelling - We will test sort 26 on Friday and begin sort 27 on Monday.

Reading -  We are reading a wonderful book, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume. We are

Continuing to use strategies learned for making sense of text.

Connecting important ideas to what been read.

Asking questions while reading.

Monitoring and revising thinking, while adding to what s/he already knows.

Understanding which graphic organizers work best for different types of reading and text structure.

Science - We begin a unit on stars and space.  We will examine;

How do stars compare in terms of color, size, and pattern?

How can students differentiate between planets and stars?

Why do stars appear to be in the same position, and planets in different positions in the solar system at different times of the year?

How do people study the solar system?

We have had a great week!  Please be sure you are studying for the Thirteen Colonies Map test on Thursday!  I have added two links under Social Studies that you can use to practice.

Reading -  We are reading informational texts on the Colonial Period.  We will read and comprehend in order to develop understanding and expertise and produces evidence of reading that:

Locates facts to answer their questions

Identifies and uses knowledge of common textual (e.g., paragraphs, topic sentences, concluding sentences, glossary) and graphic (e.g., charts, maps, diagrams, illustrations) features and common organizational structures (e.g., chronological order, cause and effect)

Distinguishes cause from effect and fact from opinion (or fiction) while reading.

Summarizes main ideas and supporting details.

Acquires new vocabulary and uses it correctly in reading and writing

Social Studies - We begin a unit on the Colonial Period.  During this unit we will concentrate on map skills such as how to locate the thirteen colonies on a map, along with major man made features such as New York City, Boston, Philadelphia and the Erie Canal.  The students will receive a map review sheet on Weds. 1/11 for a test on Thurs. 1/19.  We will also develop an understanding of how physical characteristics of an area can help to determine its economic activities

Welcome Back!  I hope everyone had a relaxing break.  We will have homework this week (see below) but I will not be sending home Monday Papers until next week on Tuesday (we are out Monday for MLK Day).
